MAROLLES, Michel de (1600-1681). Les oeuvres de Virgile traduites en prose. Paris: Quinet, 1649. An ex dono auctoris copy; Michel de Marolles, an abbot and collector, amassed 123,000 prints which were purchased in 1667 by Colbert for Louis XIV (for the sizeable sum of 28,000 livres) to form the basis of the print cabinet of the Royal Library. Folio, (350 x 228mm). Frontispiece, portraits of De Marolles and Virgil in the text, 21 full-page plates in the text, woodcut initials, head and tailpieces (lacking folding map, marginal repair to frontispiece, small marginal wormtrack to first few leaves). Contemporary full calf binding, spines and boards gilt, title gilt to spine (weak hinges, some wear). Provenance: handwritten inscription on the endpapers 'A. Dubois 1 Aprilis 1650 ex dono [..]. autoris'; early noble stamp on the title page. (1)
