Michel Cadoret (1912-1985) Garfield 1963 Oil on canvas signed lower right and titled on back 153 x 102 cm Provenance: > Collection of the artist > Private collection, Seine-et-Marne Bibliography: Cadoret exhibition catalog, Musée municipal de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1974 - reproduced and then mentioned in the "artist's collection". Exhibitions: Cadoret, Musée municipal de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1974 Condition report: Restoration in the upper left-hand corner, craquelure This canvas testifies to Michel Cadoret's definitive abandonment of figurative painting. Following his travels, he settled in New York and decided to devote himself to form and color. Working on his canvases with knives and paste, he produced works with dynamic shapes and vivid colors. His creations, now recognized on a par with those of Franz Kline and Serge Poliakoff, reflect a pioneering style for their time. Here, reds, blues and pinks are superimposed on a brown background. A light-colored core, an element of light, stands out and softens the violence of the canvas. This superimposition of material and the work done on it may echo the canvases of Pierre Soulages, but only in color! For this oil on canvas, the artist mixes vegetable matter directly into the paint. His stay in Mexico gave him a taste for natural materials, enabling him to explore relief and matter. "To define Cadoret's art, two words come to mind: freedom and violence (...) pictorial forms blossom, transcending emotions and perceptions." (Jacques Lassaigne, art critic) MLD
