A CHINESE CARVED JADE SEATED BUDDHA, QING DYNASTY (1644–1911) The smiling Buddha with downcast eyes is seated on a single lotus base in dhyanasana with his hands in dhyana mudra, his robes fall in loose folds around his body spilling over the base, seated cross-legged on a single lotus pedestal, the stone of greyish-white tone. Height: 6.7 cm.

Strung with 100 polished beads carved out of lotus seeds and a jade pendant, carved as two rats resting atop a lingzhi mushroom, one bat carved to the verso, the stone of a dark green color with brown areas. Provenance: Hungarian private collection. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural imperfections. The jade with light scratches and tiny nicks. Weight: 50.8 g Dimensions: Length 42 cm (when fastened) Bodhi (lotus) seeds are rich in tradition. It was underneath a Bodhi tree that the Buddha Shakyamuni sat before his Enlightenment—hence its seeds represent spiritual promise and a sense of dedication and faith in nurturing the "seed" of practice.
