Pierre Jean David, or David d'Angers, was a great French sculptor and medalist. He made several sculptures for the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in Paris, as well as for the south facade of the Louvre. He is also known for his vast production of medallions, celebrated in his time by Victor Hugo. It is estimated that he produced more than 600 portraits of mainly European personalities (La Fayette, A. de Humboldt, Victor Hugo, Goethe, etc.). Interestingly it seems that, apart from John Franklin, all the Americans portrayed by David were leaders of the Colombian independence: Bolivar and Santander, which we offer in this auction, and a last medallion of Joaquin Acosta. David d'Angers medallions are sought after and highly prized. ArtPrice records only two sales of Bolivar medallions, the last at Sotheby's in 2021. There is no recorded sale of the Acosta medallion, and only one from Santander (Artcurial, 2022), which is the same as the one being auctioned in our auction.
