Erich Mercker, "Nordischer Fischerhafen" On a cloudy day, numerous sailing and rowing boats are moored in the harbour, a steamship is just arriving, strongly impasto impressionistic marine painting, the reflections and water movements partly executed in incised technique, oil on canvas, 1st half 20th cent, signed lower right "E Mercker" with annotation of place of residence "M[ün]ch[e]n.", on the reverse of the stretcher probably titled "Nordischer Fischerhafen" by the artist and inscribed "Mercker München Mainzerstr. 7c/III.", with studio stamp "Erich Mercker Kunstmaler", some early loss and craquelure in the impasto paint layers, minor loss of colour in the sails in the left area of the picture and somewhat in need of cleaning, in a magnificent silver-plated hand-applied mount of the period, this with partial bumping, fold dimensions approx. 66 x 85 cm. Artist information: German landscape, city and industrial painter and speed skater (1891 Saverne [Ger.Zabern] in Lower Alsace until 1973 Munich), 1906 moved to Munich, from 1911 studied civil engineering at the Technische Hochschule München and the Technische Hochschule Berlin, 1912 German speed skating champion, from 1915 self-taught in painting, travelled to Austria, southern France, Sweden, Italy and Norway, from 1921 member of the Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft and from 1964-65 its 1st president, member of the Reichsverband Bildende, a German artists' association. President, member of the Reichsverband Bildender Künstler Deutschlands, joined the Munich artists' associations "Isar" and "Ring" in 1926, honoured with the Grand Gold Medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1937, organised the "Great German Art Exhibition" at the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich from 1937-44, bombed out in Munich in 1944 and worked in the Allgäu from 1944-54, worked for companies such as MAN, Volkswagen and Bayer after 1945, back in Munich from 1954, source: Vollmer, Dressler, Bruckmann "Münchner Maler des 19./20th century", Saur and Internet.
