A KOTO TANTO IN KOSHIRAE, THE BLADE ATTRIBUTED TO SHIMADA, WITH NBTHK CERTIFICATE A KOTO TANTO IN KOSHIRAE, THE BLADE ATTRIBUTED TO SHIMADA, WITH NBTHK CERTIFICATE Unsigned, the blade attributed to Shimada Japan, the blade early 16 th century, Muromachi period (1333-1573), the mounting Edo period (1615-1868) The blade: The sugata is hira-zukuri with iori mune, forged in itame hada with a flamboyant choji midare hamon with pronounced nioi and some ashi. The blade with horimono to each side, one with gomabashi and the other with a ken sword terminating in a groove. The nakago with one mekugi-ana and a kuri jiri. The gilt-metal habaki with diagonal file marks. The mounting: The iron tsuba of mokko gata form, with two hitsu, and finely worked to each side with a ferocious dragon amid swirling clouds. The parcel-gilt copper fuchi decorated with a band of prunus blossoms. The tsuka covered in rayskin and wrapped with dark-blue textile. The parcel-gilt and silvered metal menuki in the form of karashishi. The saya lacquered with lustrous roiro. With an NBTHK Kicho (‘Precious’) certificate attributing the blade to Shimada from the Koto period. NAGASA 29.8 cm, LENGTH 58.5 cm (the koshirae) Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear, the blade with a tiny shallow chip near the tang, some ware, little fukure, the saya with minor age cracks and light scratches.

SUKESADA: A TANTO IN SHIRASAYA, WITH NBTHK TOKUBETSU KICHO TOKEN CERTIFICATE SUKESADA: A TANTO IN SHIRASAYA, WITH NBTHK TOKUBETSU KICHO TOKEN CERTIFICATE By Sukesada, signed Sukesada Japan, early to mid-Edo period (1615-1868) The sugata is hira-zukuri with iori mune and mu sori, forged in itame hada with a suguha hamon and komaru boshi. The nakago with one mekugi-ana, a kuri jiri, and the mei reading SUKESADA. The silver hibachi with horizontal file marks. With an NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho (“Especially Precious”) Token certificate dated 14 February 1966. NAGASA 22.6 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and a tiny shallow chip near the kissaki.

A SUPERB NARA SCHOOL SENTOKU TSUBA DEPICTING CHIDORI ON A REED RIVERBANK, WITH NBTHK TOKUBETSU KICHO CERTIFICATE A SUPERB NARA SCHOOL SENTOKU TSUBA DEPICTING CHIDORI ON A REED RIVERBANK, WITH NBTHK TOKUBETSU KICHO CERTIFICATE Unsigned Japan, 19 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The large sentoku tsuba of nade-kakugata shape with a kozuka and kogai hitsu-ana, both filled with ategane, the design worked with gold, shakudo, and silver takazogan depicting a flock of chidori (plovers) flying above a riverbank with tall reeds. The rim is set with a rope frame made of silver. HEIGHT 8.4 cm, LENGTH 7.8 cm WEIGHT 211.4 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. The ategane fill to the kogai hitsu-ana with a loss. Provenance: From a private collection in southern Germany, acquired from Lothar Heubel. With a tokubetsu kicho (especially precious) certificate of the NBTHK, dated 21 May 1981.

A SOTEN SCHOOL IRON TSUBA DEPICTING THE BATTLE OF DAN-NO-URA, GENPEI WARS A SOTEN SCHOOL IRON TSUBA DEPICTING THE BATTLE OF DAN-NO-URA, GENPEI WARS Unsigned Japan, Soten school, late 18 th to early 19 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The marugata iron tsuba with a kozuka hitsu-ana, the kogai hitsu-ana plugged, the nakago-ana with some sekigane, finely worked in hikone-bori to depict a fierce combat at sea between the Minamoto and Taira clans, the samurai maneuvering their boats close together for hand-to-hand combat amid the swelling waves. HEIGHT 7.7 cm, LENGTH 7.2 cm WEIGHT 113 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear commensurate with age, few traces of use and light rubbing. Accompanied by a Hozon (worthy of preservation) certificate from the NBTHK attesting to the tsuba’s quality and authenticity. The NBTHK Kanteisho (certificate of appraisal and authenticity) dated to 17 September 2021 reads: HOZON – Worthy of Preservation (yellow paper) (A sword fitting Worthy of Conservation, the kanteisho issued by the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword) NBTHK certificate number: 4019280.
