Temper patterns in the point(Bohshi): slightly bent and back towards the waist. A WAKIZASHI IN SHIRASAYA WITH KOSHIRAE AND TWO NBTHK CERTIFICATES A WAKIZASHI IN SHIRASAYA WITH KOSHIRAE AND TWO NBTHK CERTIFICATES By Betsujin, signed Kanemoto Japan, Edo period (1615-1868) The blade: The sugata is shinogi-zukuri with iori mune, chu-kissaki, and torii-sori. The hamon is gunome-midare with nioi. The hada is mokume. The nakago with one mekugi-ana, kuri jiri, and a mei reading KANEMOTO. With an NBTHK Kicho Token (‘Precious Blade’) certificate, no. 20050, issued on 20 January, Showa 45 (1970), by Hosokawa Moritatsu, president of the NBTHK. According to this certificate, the blade is by Betsujin albeit signed Kanemoto. The mounting: Comprising a roiro-lacquered saya; a black-lacquered wood kozuka with gold-lacquered dragon design; a rayskin tsuka with dark-blue tsuka-ito; a plain copper one-piece habaki; an iron tsuba of mokko-gata shape decorated with mukade-zogan (centipede-like inlay) of alternating iron and brass staples, also known as Shingen in reference to the daimyo Takeda Shingen (1521-1573) who favored this design; gold-inlaid shakudo fuchi-kashira with dragon design, each signed Hirado ju Kunishige; and similarly worked menuki. With an NBTHK Kicho (‘Precious’) certificate issued on 31 October, Showa 45 (1970). With a silk brocade cover decorated with irises and grasses. NAGASA 46.7 cm, TOTAL LENGTH 60.2 cm (the blade), 67.5 cm (the shirasaya), and 66 cm (the koshirae) Condition: The blade in very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, tiny blisters and minor fukure here and there. The mounts overall in good condition, the saya with minor age cracks, some flaking to lacquer, with associated old repairs and minor touchups, the shakudo kozuka mentioned in the certificate is lost.
