Jakob Matthias II SCHMUTZER (1733-1811) Portrait of a man Sanguine on laid paper Signed lower right 46 x 37.6 cm (view) Framed Comparative work: Head of a Youth with Open Mouth, 1765-1810, Metropolitan Museum n°53.228.10 NOTICE Born to an engraver, Jakob Matthias studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He was awarded a scholarship to study in Paris in 1762 with the engraver Jean Georges Wille. Returning to Vienna in 1766, he became director of the engraving collection. It was under his direction in 1772 that the Académie de Gravure became part of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Condition report available on request: [email protected]
