[Manuscript] Letter from Cardinal Jacques Davy du Perron to Henri IV, April 5, 1607. Manuscript of 8p in-4, in Italian. Amazing period translation of the letter sent by Cardinal du Perron to Henri IV, now preserved at the BnF (BnF ms. fr. 18002 f° 92-99 v°). This letter is of key importance in the history of Henri IV's negotiations with the Papacy. In it, the Cardinal announces to the King that he had succeeded in rallying Paul V to the Cardinal de Joyeuse's views, and in getting him to abandon the Jesuit cause to allow his reconciliation with the Serenissima. Unfortunately, we do not know why this Italian translation was produced, or to whom it belonged. A work of verse.

Paris, Pissot, 1757. 2 vol. in-12, marbled calf, ornate smooth spine, title and appendix pages, marbled boards (period binding). Minor worm damage at tail. Engraved frontispiece portrait after Van Dick. Louis des Balbes Crillon (1541-1615) was one of the greatest captains of the 16th century, friend and comrade-in-arms of Henri IV, he served successfully under several kings. A native of Provence, he left his name to the village of Crillon le Brave. A fine copy.
