René Clarot, Market Day in Nuremberg Summer market bustle on the main market square in Nuremberg before its destruction in World War 2. World War II, on the left the "Schöne Brunnen", behind it the towers of the Sebalduskirche, naive-looking, impasto painting with broad brushstrokes, oil on canvas and stretcher, signed and dated "Clarot R. [19}41" lower right, small loss in the canvas, somewhat in need of restoration, unframed, dimensions approx. 63.5 x 87.5 cm. Artist information: Belgian marine, landscape and veduta painter (1882 Anderlecht - 1972 Brussels), studied 1896-1905 at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts Brussels under Herman Richir and Constant Montald, undertook various study trips, including through Germany, Italy and France, together with James Ensor member of the artists' group "L'Essor", resident in Blankenberge for twenty years, active first in Anderlecht, later in Brussels-Elsene, lived for a time in Paris, source: Vollmer, AKL, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Bénézit, arto "Belgisches Künstlerlexikon 1830-1979" and Internet.

Set of 5 letters from generals and marshals of the Second Empire: - AMBERT (Joachim, general, 1804-1890), L.A.S., Tours, June 17, 1835, 3 pp. in-8, addressed to his uncle, director of domain registration in Melun, about the La Roncière affair (wrongly accused of rape by the daughter of the commandant of the Saumur cavalry school, General de Morell, a close relative of Marshal Soult, Émile de la Roncière (himself the son of the famous Empire general, an enemy of Marshal Soult) was sentenced on July 10, 1835 to 10 years in prison. He was finally released and rehabilitated after fourteen years, and embarked on a brilliant colonial career). He wrote: "[...] this affair has a prodigious impact and I have no doubt that its importance will call me to Paris as a witness. [...] I confess to you that I am quite saddened by the thought of appearing before a court of law, and having to deal with journalists and the public. I know that I'm here in the interests of society, and I need to remind myself of the motto that the Amberts of the first line have always put into practice: 'Do what you must, come what may' [...]". He goes on to say that he is exhausted by the extra workload created by the large number of recruits.
