Ɏ NOBUKAZU: AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A SNAKE WITH FROG, SANSUKUMI Ɏ NOBUKAZU: AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A SNAKE WITH FROG, SANSUKUMI By Nobukazu, signed Nobukazu Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Amusingly carved as a coiled snake with a comical expression. A little frog is seated in an opening of the winding body of the snake, which is about to close and crush the poor amphibian. Natural himotoshi which allow the netsuke to perfectly hang on the obi, so that both the frog and the looming snake are visible. Signed NOBUKAZU in a slightly faded reserve. HEIGHT 4.1 cm Condition: Very good condition with some wear. Fine patina. Provenance: A noted Belgian private collection, acquired at Galerie Zacke in 2020. Generous asymmetrical himotoshi to the back. HEIGHT 7.8 cm Condition: Good condition with some wear, age cracks, and some old worn-down chips. Provenance: A noted Belgian private collection.

A WOOD NETSUKE OF HANASAKA JIJI, EDO PERIOD A WOOD NETSUKE OF HANASAKA JIJI, EDO PERIOD Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Carved as Hanasaka Jiji sitting on his resurrected tree stump, in his hands a basket of ashes with which he uses to revive the dead trees, himotoshi and signature RYUKEI with kakihan on the underside. HEIGHT 3.6 cm Condition: Good condition with minimal wear and a single age crack. Provenance: A noted Belgian private collection.

DERKACHENKO: A WOOD NETSUKE OF THE SANSUKUMI DERKACHENKO: A WOOD NETSUKE OF THE SANSUKUMI By Alexander Derkachenko Ukraine, 2020 A large frog, with realistically rendered skin, is seated on top of a fruit from which a snake emerges; a snail carved beside it. The netsuke depicts the sansukumi motif, meaning ‘mutual control’. The snake will consume the frog, however there is a catch – the frog has already eaten a poisonous snail, so too the snake must perish. The frog’s eyes are double inlaid in pale and dark horn and the snake’s tongue is inlaid in dark-stained mammoth ivory. Asymmetrical himotoshi through the underside next to the artist signature. With original felted wood box. HEIGHT 2.9 cm Condition: Excellent condition.
