A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A CLUSTER OF SHIMEJI MUSHROOMS A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A CLUSTER OF SHIMEJI MUSHROOMS Unsigned Japan, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as a cluster of five shimeji mushrooms, densely packed together, forming a pleasingly tactile and compact composition, the underside of the netsuke naturalistically carved with roots. Note the contrast between the smoothly polished caps and incised radial gills. Natural himotoshi through one of the stems. HEIGHT 3.5 cm Condition: Good condition with some wear, small nicks to the caps, and two short age cracks, one of which has been plugged. Provenance: Collection Gabor Orszagh, Budapest, Hungary.

The wood stained and bearing a fine patina. Himotoshi through the mushroom stem. HEIGHT 6 cm Condition: Good condition with expected wear and surface scratches. Provenance: A noted Belgian private collection.

With a single himotoshi through the base next to the signature SUKENAGA. LENGTH 4.5 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Provenance: Italian private collection, acquired from Pierre-Eric Becker, Cannes, on 3 April 2001. Austrian private collection, acquired from the above.

Good himotoshi to the back and signed with the artist’s typical signature within a polished reserve. HEIGHT 4 cm Condition: Excellent condition. Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired from the artist directly.
