Byzantine icon: The Baptism of Christ at the Jordan by John the Baptist, probably Mount Athos, Greece, 17th/18th century, ,Egg tempera and gilding over chalk ground on fruitwood, the classical depiction of the Theophany under a carved Romanesque arch: Christ in the Jordan between high rocks, John baptizing him from the left bank, opposite three angels with reverently veiled hands venerate the Son of God, while the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove floats down from the top of the round arch, with the usual inscriptions in red, in particular in the left upper and lower margin with worm damage outside the depiction, two eyelets on the right margin, 31 x 20.5 cm.
