One of these treasures is now a well-guarded gem in the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique in Brussels: the Echternach Evangelistary, a magnificent manuscript from the time of the Salian emperors ... The lid of the casket contains an elaborate replica of a bone carving with ornately pierced, partially painted decorative panels. This work of art, now kept in the Archabbey of St. Peter in Salzburg, adorns the cover of a 12th-century gospel book from the Salian period and thus provides a suitable cover for the Echternach Evangelistary (publisher's advertisement).
