CHINA TANG DYNASTY (618-907) Important pale terracotta mingqi (funerary substitute) partially glazed in "sancai" (brown, green and cream) depicting a standing groom, torso turned to the right, arms holding reins and restraining an animal. He is wearing a belted helmet and leggings, while his forehead is encircled by a knotted headband. The face is full and marked, with a lively expression. H. 61.5 cm PROVENANCE: Certificate of authenticity from Galerie Gisèle Croës, Brussels, dated November 13, 1984 (Oxford thermoluminescence test of May 31, 1984, no. 366g13).

Comprising eight heads depicting court ladies, each with an elaborate coiffure, one head of a guardian, a courtier’s head, and a painted head of a man with a tall conical hat. Provenance: German private collection. Condition: Overall good condition, commensurate with age as expected from Han and Tang dynasty excavations, few small losses, minuscule chips, wear to the pigments, and soil encrustations. Weight: 3,408 g (total) Dimensions: Height 9.5 – 15 cm
