BUSUTTIL, Salvatore. Solemn Vatican procession of Corpus Christi. Directed by one of the Master of Ceremonies of His Holiness Gregory XVI. Rome, Deodato Minelli, 1838. Oblong folio, 327 x 478 mm. Binding in coeval black full cloth decorated with blind embossing, title in gold on front plate "Vatican Procession of Corpus Christi." 35 finely hand-colored intaglio plates with gold and silver parts (frontispiece, plate with history of the procession in Italian and French, and 33 plates illustrating the procession). Boards with traces of use, spotting and pale marginal flourishes, skillfully repaired tear at margin of board with history of the Procession, but overall good complete copy. Very rare series of finely hand-colored plates with gold and silver details depicting the Corpus Christi procession (first Thursday after Pentecost) as it took place in the time of Gregory XVI. The procession, which unfolds along 33 plates, accurately portrays costumes and details and is therefore a document of great social-historical interest. The captions specify the ecclesiastical authorities with the various religious orders, bishops and patriarchs portrayed, as well as military men such as grenadiers, Carabinieri, Dragoons, Civic and Swiss Guards along with civilians and commoners who came from the city and provincial boroughs in the popular costumes typical of the Roman-Lazio area who attend the sides of the procession individually or in small family groups forming real genre scenes. There is no shortage of elegant middle-class couples and pilgrim figures in their characteristic attire. Salvatore Busuttil (1784-1854) was one of Malta's most important artists. Also active in Rome, he specialized in costume plates. Oblong Folio, 327x478 mm. Full black cloth binding decorated with blind tooling, gilt title on front cover "Vatican Procession of Corpus Christi." 35 plates engraved on copper finely hand colored with gilt and silver inserts (titlepage, plate with the story of the Procession in Italian and French and 33 plates depicting the Procession). Plates with traces of wear and slight foxing, little tear on the lower margin of the plate with the story of the Procession skillful restored, overall a good complete specimen. Very rare series of finely hand-colored plates with gilt and silver details representing the Corpus Domini procession (first Thursday after Pentecost) as it took place at the time of Gregory XVI. The parade, which unfolds along 33 plates, portrays costumes and details with great accuracy and is therefore a document of great historical-social interest. The captions specify the ecclesiastical authorities with the various religious orders, bishops and patriarchs portrayed, as well as soldiers such as grenadiers, Carabinieri, Dragoons, Civic and Swiss Guards together with civilians and commoners arriving from the city villages and the province with the popular costumes typical of the area around Rome and of the region who attend the sides of the procession individually or in small family groups, forming real genre skits. Elegant bourgeois couples and figures of pilgrims in their characteristic clothing are depicting too.Salvatore Busuttil (1784-1854) was one of the most important Maltese artist. Active also in Rome, he was specializing in costume paintings.
