Description

ROUEN Pair of helmet-shaped ewers on pedestal in high-fired earthenware decorated in blue and iron-red monochrome with lambrequins, foliate scrolls and tongues, the body with the arms of the WICQUET family, the spouts adorned with a mascaron. Early 18th century. (A few enamel chips and a possible non-through crack on the neck of one ewer). Height: 30 cm. Beneath the foot, a "Musée des Arts Décoratifs exposition 1932" label and a "Vigier" label. NB: This pair of ewers may have been commissioned by Victor du WICQUET (1630-1710), chevalier, baron d'Ordre et maître des eaux et forêts du Boulonnais. Descended from a family from Hainaut, whose lineage is said to be Hugues du Wicquet, cited in 1281, the members of this family left their coat of arms to the commune of Saint-Martin-Boulogne, by deliberation of September 30, 1985. The Wicquet family, who bore Vert a chevron Argent between three rustres Argent, were the local lords. Jean-Antoine-Marie-François du Wicquet, knight, alderman of Desvres in 1575, 1576, 1578 and 1584, silversmith of the town of Boulogne and farmer of the viscounty of Outreau, husband of Jeanne Wiart, was lord of Saint-Martin.
