Judith Leiber is an iconic handbag brand often seen on the red carpet, carried by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Blake Lively. Judith Leiber's brand has a rich history. Born in 1921 in Budapest, Hungary, she learned the craft of handbag making as an intern. Fleeing the Nazi occupation in 1939, she moved to New York City in 1947. After working for various handbag brands, she founded her own company in 1963. Initially, Judith Leiber made green leather handbags from calfskin. The switch to rhinestones happened by accident when she used them to cover a stained bag, leading to the brand’s iconic look. Judith Leiber handbags have been a favorite among first ladies, including Hillary Clinton, Mamie Eisenhower, and Barbara Bush, symbolizing luxury and status. Over the years, the brand has received numerous awards, such as the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement (1994), a Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Visionary Woman Award. The brand is known for its eclectic novelty clutches, featuring designs like footballs, brick phones, lipsticks, and cupcakes, which have further distinguished Judith Leiber in the fashion world. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Sienna Miller, and Jennifer Lopez have all sported Judith Leiber bags. The Jenner/Kardashian family, in particular, has a strong connection with the brand, often collaborating and showcasing their collections. Judith Leiber retired in 1998 and passed away in 2018, shortly after her husband. Despite changes in ownership, the Judith Leiber brand continues to thrive. Many of her Minaudières are displayed in museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Leiber Museum, founded by the Leibers, remains operational, preserving her legacy.
