ATTRIBUTED TO VASILII SHUTOVA: A 19TH CENTURY RUSSIAN CARVED WOOD ARMCHAIR, C.1880 Antique 19th Century Russian wood armchair carved in trompe l'oeil with the back rest and front legs in the form of a horses harness carved with the Russian inscription: Tishe edesh - dal'she budesh (Driving slower, you will advance further), with a splat carved to simulate a leather horse straps, the axe-form handles set in an ogee arch-form seat, engraved with scrolling decoration and with a pair of winter gloves resting on the back. The form derives from Russian pan-slavic folk furniture and was originally produced by Vasili Shutov (1826-1887) in 1870 designes were presented at the All-Russian Manufacturing Exhibition in St. Petersburg. His iconic designs came to embody the authentic Russian traditional style and became highly appreciated by Emperor Alexander III, and remained popular for decades. In Great Condition - No Damage.
