A FINE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH COMMODE A VANTAUX AFTER ANDRE CHARLES BOULLE Napoleon III period, circa 1870 in the 18th century sytle, the ormolu mounted, 'Boulle' style cut brass and tortoiseshell inlaid cabinet or credenza surmounted by a black marble top, above a central cupboard door enclosing shelves, the door with an ornate gilt bronze mount cast as a ribbon-tied cartouche with a seated figure of Urania, flanked by classical maiden terms to the outer doors, above a breakfront plinth, 173cm wide x 113cm high x 47cm deep The late 17th century style gilt bronze relief at the centre of this exceptional cabinet is in the style of Andre Charles Boulle and can be seen in some other important cabinets from this period, for example a similar cartouche is identified on a late 19th century bureau à cylinder, sold at Christie’s, London, 22 September 2011, lot 39. A further example was offered at Sotheby's, 17 May 2022 lot 74, estimate £50,000 - 80,000. Sotheby's suggest that the mounts on their cabinet which include a seemingly identical relief of Urania, could have been made by Henri Picard, the notable fondeur and doreur who was working in Paris at this time and produced gilt bronze mounts of exceptional quality. This lot is subject to CITES due to the tortoiseshell content.
