A PAIR OF 19TH CENTURY FRENCH ORMOLU CHENETS IN THE LOUIS XV STYLE the fire dogs or andirons in gilt bronze, in the 18th century Rococo style, one surmounted by a China man the other a Chinese maiden, richly dressed with feathered hats, raised on bases cast with shellwork, C scrolls and rocaille, 31cm high x 35cm wide (2) These chenets are based on known 18th century designs of the same form, depicting Oriental figures. An 18th century pair of similar design with Chinese figures, was sold at Christie's on 5th July 2001, lot 88, a further pair from the collection of Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, 5 May 1984, lot 145 ($ 11,000), and is discussed in F.J.B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, New York, 1966, vol II, p. 373.
