PIERRE JULES MENE (FRENCH, 1810-1879): A RARE BRONZE GROUP 'CHASSEUR AFRICAIN NO. 2'

PIERRE JULES MENE (FRENCH, 1810-1879): A RARE BRONZE GROUP 'CHASSEUR AFRICAIN NO. 2' the 19th century bronze sculpture depicting a North African hunter on Arab horse holding a rifle, with two colour patination, the saddle cloth, mane and tail of the horse and the robes and hat of the figure with golden patination, on a naturalistic oval base signed P.J. MÊNE, 46cm high x 40cm wide Footnotes Mêne first executed this model in 1877 and exhibited it in the Salon of 1878 in wax and 1879 in bronze. The Mêne-Cain workshop produced an edition in 1901, and it was also cast by Barbedienne and featured in their catalogue of 1894 and by Susse Fres, who cast an edition in 1908. There is a similar example to the present group with parcel gilt patination in the Collection Fondation Ishana, which was cast by the Mêne workshop during the sculptor's lifetime. Chasseur Africain No 1 is of similar form but was produced in a larger size. Related Literature: M. Poletti & A.
