LEROLLE (Henry), 1848-1929 L.A.S. ""Henry Lerolle"", Pressagny par Vernon, July 29, 1883, 3 pp. in-8 on mourning border paper, probably addressed to DURAND-RUEL (from a later handwritten note in pencil): ""I am delighted to own L'Enfant prodigue* and I thank you for having decided Puvis de Chavannes to let me have it for 6000 f. Please be good enough to keep the painting in your home until my return. [...]"" * This painting by Puvis de Chavannes was exhibited at the 1879 Salon and is now in the collection of the Bührle Foundation in Zurich. Born into a wealthy family, Henry Lerolle entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before making his debut at the 1868 Salon. He surrounded himself with artists whose works he collected, musicians and writers such as Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Claude Debussy, Serge Prokoviev, Ernest Chausson, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Maurice Denis, Gustave Moreau and Albert Besnard, from whom he commissioned a series of stained-glass windows for his Paris mansion. Henry Lerolle, his wife and two daughters posed for many painters, including Edgar Degas, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Maurice Denis and Albert Besnard.
