THOMAS COUTURE (Senlis 1815 - Villiers-le-Bel 1879) Study for the Nobility Black pencil. Size: 25 x 17.5 cm. Various illegible annotations on the drawing. Slightly oiled. Cartel at bottom center of mount "T.Couture". Our drawing is a preparatory for Noblesse, conserved in the Musée d'Art et Archéologique de Senlis (inv.A.00.671) and dated 1866. Numerous studies exist for this painting (see : A.Boime, Thomas Couture and the eclectic vision, Yale university Press, New Haven and London, , 1980, p.374, fig.108). We would like to thank Mr. Thierry Cazaux, who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this drawing after an in-person examination.
