[HELOT (Jules)]: Histoire centennale du sucre de betterave [1812-1912]. Album illustrated with reproductions of documents from the collection of Mr. Jules Hélot. Published in commemoration of the centenary of indigenous sugar production by the Syndicat des fabricants de sucre de France. Paris, Héliotypie Fortier et Marotte, 1912. One volume. 29 by 40 cm. 179 pages. Red half cloth with corners, smooth titled spine, upper board decorated with a large gilt beet surrounded by the dates 1812 and 1912 (publisher's binding). One corner worn, one corner with a trace of wetness (not serious), a number in ink in one corner of the upper board, inner hinge cracked (not affecting the solidity of the copy), otherwise good condition of the binding. Very good condition inside (a few folds in the serpents). Numerous illustrations in black and color in the text (caricatures, portraits, facsimiles, photographic illustrations), under covers, all mounted on tabs. Unique and impressive edition of this rare album commemorating the imperial decree of January 24, 1812, by which, following the first industrial extraction of beet sugar by Jean-Baptiste Quéruel and Benjamin Delessert (late 1811), the first industrial production was organized on the territory of metropolitan France, then completely cut off from its sugar colonies as well as from British trade. The origin of beet sugar no doubt explains the bookplate in the library of Marcel DUNAN, a leading historian specializing in the 1st Empire.
