Adrien BARRERE (1874-1931) . Portrait-charge of Paul Painlevé (1863-1933) titled: "de la science à la politique par A Barrère - M. Painlevé, pierre duBloc, brave les lois de l'équilibre" (From science to politics by A Barrère - M. Painlevé, pierre duBloc, braves the laws of equilibrium). Pastel and white gouache signed lower right and titled. 34 x 29 cm. Paul Painlevé, a graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure, teacher and researcher in mathematics and physics, also led a national political career, holding numerous posts as minister and President of the Council from 1916 until his death in 1933. The caption alludes to his centrist stance, seeking a permanent compromise between right and left, the former federated under the banner of the Bloc National. Paul Painlevé was a member of the Cartel des Gauches, but held ministerial posts under Raymond Poincaré, leader of the Bloc National.
