William THORNLEY (1857 - 1935). Snowy Landscape "Hunting Rendezvous at Gisors". Oil on canvas signed lower right, dated, annotated on reverse and labeled. Height : 60 cm - Width : 73 cm A Franco-English painter and pupil of Puvis de Chavannes, William Thornley began his career as a lithographer for his friends Pissaro and Monet. In 1878, he exhibited at the Paris Salon, and in 1881 won a distinction for his neo-impressionist painting, in which snow is one of his favorite themes. Since 1981, the Musée du Château de Grouchy in Osny, not far from the hunting lodge he painted here and where he settled in 1895, has housed almost 200 works by the artist.
