The work is a cycle of republican and patriotic poems inspired by war and defeat. Originally entitled La Mouche du coche, Malassis authoritatively changed the title. In addition to the regular in-12 edition, dated 1870 or 1871, Malassis produced a large-format deluxe edition in small numbers on hollande or chine. Copy on chine, with the original etching by Félicien Rops in 2 states, in black and red.
