Russia - CUSTINE (Astolphe-Louis-Léonor, marquis de). Russia in 1839. Paris, Amyot, 1843. 4 vol. in-12 green half calf, finely decorated smooth spines, gilt title and tomaison(Sotheran, Sackwill St., London). Second edition, revised, corrected and enlarged, published in the year of the original, complete with fold-out table in volume 4. Custine's most famous work, and undoubtedly his masterpiece. Composed on his return from Russia, probably in 1840, this account, written in the form of letters, met with considerable success from the moment of its publication; it was published in Germany and England, but banned in Russia, whose government did not appreciate the author's uncompromising judgments, such as this one: "If the Tsar has no more pity in his heart than he expresses in his politics, I pity Russia. On the other hand, if his feelings are superior to his actions, I pity the Tsar." Unstained spine, rare foxing, otherwise a fine copy in an attractive later English binding signed (c. 1890) in imitation.

Partly first edition, including an overview of the Russian Empire from Peter the Great to the end of 1817. A fine copy. Bookplate with arms of the Marquis de Fortia d'Urban.
