Partly original edition, illustrated with a fold-out map (small split, not missing). It was at Thiers' request that Michel Chevalier, economist and politician, left France for the United States, from where he sent his letters to the Journal des Débats. They caused quite a stir (Larousse), and Humboldt considered the work a treatise on the civilization of the peoples of the West. A fine copy, nicely bound. Some foxing.
