Paris, Treuttel et Würtz [Imprimerie royale], 1824. 2 parts in one volume in-8, black chagrin, jansenist, yellow edges (modern binding). First edition of this fundamental treatise by Champollion (1790-1832), published two years after the famous Lettre à Dacier and printed at public expense. In it, the Egyptologist presents the results of his research into hieroglyphic writing, which he describes as a complex system that is at once figurative, symbolic and phonetic (p. 327). Illustrated with a total of 48 lithographed plates. Stamp and cachet of M. de Breuvery in Bagatelle, Calvados: is this the traveler and author of the book on Egypt and Turkey published in 1836? Small hole deleting two letters on folio L4. Some foxing, slight wetness on the edge of the title. Rust stains on leaves 327-330, brown stain on plate II.
