Reference is made in the opening to an indigenous uprising in East Africa, specifically "au Sud de Zambeze," or the central province of Portuguese Mozambique. The news was transmitted via telegraph to Lisbon by the Portuguese colonial government in Inhambane, today's southern Mozambique city facing the Indian Ocean.
