Description

Cornelis Pronk (1691 – 1759) Zel-Neering or Darink-Delving, as it used to be practiced in Zeeland. "This depiction, made after an old painting in 't Gasthuis in Zierikzee, shows, in a View of the Island of Schouwen and the City of Zierikzee, the way, in which the darink was dug out of the ground, laid to dry in heaps, and then burned to ash: which was then taken to the Salt Kiln, and, mixed with seawater, was made into salt. By Cornelis Pronk (1691 - 1759) after a painting by Jan Caspar Philips (1690 - 1775). Hand-colored copper engraving ca.1745. 290 x170 mm.
