Description

Cut-out tapestry panel from the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson, late 17th century. Technical characteristics : Wool and silk. Dimensions: Height: 240cm; 285cm. This tapestry recounts a historical scene, most likely set in Syria in 123 A.D., between Hadrian, emperor of Rome, and Khosrô 1st, king of Parthia. The Roman emperor Hadrian, in cuirass, cape over his shoulder, right hand raised, aided by a dwarf aide-de-camp holding his helmet and accompanied by an advisor and a legionary armed with a pick and shield, addresses the turbaned, richly dressed Parthian king seated on a throne of golden scales. He is also surrounded by advisors and soldiers, shaded by hangings. The landscape is hilly and wooded, and a river can be seen between the two sovereigns, probably the Euphrates, chosen as the border between Rome and Parthia. Hadrian chose to abandon the conquests of his predecessor, Trajan, in Armenia, Mesopotamia and Assyria in order to consolidate his borders. Gallooned border. (Maintenance restorations, some natural oxidation).
