Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659 Perpignan - 1743 Paris) Portrait of Everhard (Eberhard) Jabach In this bust portrait, composed in an oval, Jabach is depicted in an exceptionally casual, unpretentious manner, looking to the left in three-quarter profile, wearing a black taffeta house cap trimmed with black lace; although he wears a precious gold-embroidered vest under his black coat, it is unbuttoned to reveal his pleated white shirt. Jabach (1618 Cologne - 1695 Paris) was one of the most dazzling and influential personalities of the 17th century; he came from a wealthy merchant dynasty that had been based in Cologne since the 14th century. In 1638, he settled in Paris and took up a prominent position there as a great banker, entrepreneur and passionate, insatiable art collector. In 1642, Jabach became financial administrator to Cardinal Jules Mazarin, the ruling minister of France, and in 1664 he became the first director of the newly founded French East India Company. As a patron of the arts, Jabach also cultivated lively contacts with the leading artists of his time. In 1637, he commissioned the famous "Crucifixion of Peter" from Peter Paul Rubens for the church of St. Peter in Cologne. He himself commissioned several paintings by Anthony van Dyck, Peter Lely and the French court painter Hyacinthe Rigaud, and Charles Lebrun painted a monumental work for his family in 1660. At the same time, Jabach amassed important art collections, and many Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, some of which are now in the Louvre, passed through his hands.
