Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741 Versailles - 1828 Paris) after Bust of Diana Alabaster. Artist's proof; 19th century sculptor's fine and high quality bust with head turned into profile, inspired by the large, full-length marble sculpture of Diana, goddess of the hunt, completed by Houdon in 1780 and now in the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. Houdon was one of the most important sculptors of his time and enjoyed international fame at the royal courts of Europe and the USA, particularly for his portrait sculptures. From 1767 onwards, he also created several busts and life-size sculptures of Diana, which caused a sensation. Houdon's works can be found in the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum, among others.
