A Staffordshire figure of a British army veteran, c.1810-20, wearing the red coat of his uniform, his left leg replaced with a wooden peg, and a figure of a seated boy reading from a book held in his right hand, restoration to the veteran's hat, 16cm max. (2) Provenance: a private collection in Wiltshire. Disabled veterans from the Napoleonic Wars were a common sight in England during the first decades of the 19th century. Many were forced to resort to begging; others, such as Billy Waters, forged a living through busking.
