Michelangelo Maestri (active around 1800 - 1812 in Rome) attr; Roman servant with tray and decanter A figure in a flowing, light robe floating in front of a black background; a festoon frieze of grapes and fully bearded male heads on the base. The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present sheet is based on etchings by Tommaso Piroli from the multi-volume publication "Le pitture antiche d'Ercolano", published in Naples in 1757-1792 and later in Rome. Gouache (over outline etching?)/paper. 45 cm x 35 cm. Frame. Attributed to Michelangelo Maestri (active circa 1800-1812 in Rome). Gouache (over etching?) on paper.

The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present sheet is based on etchings by Tommaso Piroli from the multi-volume publication "Le pitture antiche d'Ercolano", published in Naples in 1757-1792 and later in Rome. Michelangelo Maestri (active around 1800 - 1812 in Rome) attr; Medea in a chariot Depiction against a black background with Medea in a chariot drawn by two horses, behind her a vessel with burning fire and a cloud of smoke as well as the floating figure of Zeus, the father of the gods, with snakes in his raised right hand. The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by wealthy travelers and aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present sheet was created in close imitation of a fresco by Giulio Romano from around 1520 that was once in the Villa Lante in Rome. In contrast to this, however, the female figure was given a robe and transformed into a Medea by the addition of Zeus with the snakes. Gouache (over outline etching?)/paper. Approx. 45 cm x 60.5 cm. Frame. Attributed to Michelangelo Maestri (active circa 1800-1812 in Rome). Gouache (over etching?) on paper.

The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by wealthy travelers and aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present sheet was created in close imitation of an etching entitled "Venus" by Tommaso Piroli in "Peintures de la Villa Lante à Rome" (1st edition Paris 1803), which in turn reproduces a fresco by Giulio Romano created around 1520, which was once in the Villa Lante in Rome and can now be found in the Palazzo Zuccari.
