Emanuele Caroni (1826 Rancate/Mendrisio/Ticino/Switzerland - after 1892[?] Florence) "Birth of Cupid". Original title White Carrara marble, c. 1875-1880, signed and dated with place name Firenze (Florence). Fully sculptural depiction of Cupid "hatching" from a large egg lying on a meadow of flowers. He is supporting himself with both hands on the irregular edges of the egg, while he is already stepping out with his right leg. Caroni studied at the Brera Academy in Milan under the Swiss sculptor Vincenzo Vela, before moving to Florence as a student of Lorenzo Bartolini, where he settled permanently. The sculptor gained an international reputation, was represented by galleries in Florence and exhibited his works in Italy, France and America. At the Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, he exhibited his "Birth of Cupid", among other works, and the Christopher Columbus statue commissioned by Italian-Americans was also exhibited there. In 1887 Caroni won a gold medal for his "Ophelia" at the Paris Salon. Damaged; h. 70 cm. White Carrara marble, circa 1875-1880. Signed with Firenze (Florence). Flaws.
