AN OTTOMAN SILK AND METAL-THREAD BROCADE (KEMHA) FRAGMENT, BURSA TURKEY, 17TH-18TH CENTURY Of rectangular shape, brightly embroidered in gilt and silver threads with a mihrab to the center, a hanging mosque lamp and floral sprays growing from a large vase on a red silk ground.The outer border with elegant Ottoman Turkish inscriptions in mirror stylized calligraphy. The silver surface features metal-wrapped thread emphasized by the bright red background, a color combination popular at the Ottoman court. Based on the shape of the fragment, this lampas-woven silk (kemha) was probably once used as part of a garment.
