Description

A GARNISH COMPOSED OF A CENTRAL CLOCK AND TWO CANDELABRA'S, 19 CENTURY Garnish composed of an imposing central clock and its two three-light candelabra, of Orientalist inspiration, in polychrome regula. The clock is decorated with a circular dial with enamel cartridges topped with a stylized, cut-out pediment. The central element of the clock is a young oriental dancer who emerges from behind a curtain in the spirit of the productions of the Vienna bronzes, of which certain lamp models with harem scenes evoke the same universe. The two candelabra are represented by a standing Arab hunter with his arms crossed and his weapon alongside an ostrich holding the arms of light in their beaks. This Orientalist fireplace surround dating from the 19th century is probably of Austrian manufacture. HISTORY The Western imagination was imbued for centuries with familiar and traditional images belonging to a dual culture. The dream, moreover, the taste for exoticism were based on references drawn indefinitely from all kinds of sources, the first of which was the Bible. Continuing its taste for the universal and the interest shown by Westerners in oriental aesthetics, the West was at the crossroads of colonial history, the history of science and that of the world of entertainment and the grandiose Universal Exhibitions who shaped international relations for more than a century (1851-1958) Clock Height: 65 cm. Width: 43 cm. Depth: 19 cm. Ostrich candleholders: Height: 69 cm. Base: 11 by 15 cm.
