A JAPANESE SADO ISHÔ’DANSU 衣装箪笥 (CABINET OF DRAWERS) WITH A SECRET, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY High-quality Sado wooden ishô'dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections. Lavily clad with decorative iron hardware featuring rich designs, and a little secret. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed. The drawer faces made from solid native cedar (sugi) wood. Finished with a deep dark red lacquer with a great patina. The upper part is configured with two large drawers, and the bottom with four drawers of different sizes and a hinged door. Opening to three more small drawers. Behind these drawers lies a concealed storage compartment. As illustrated in the photos, the small drawer on the right is slightly shorter. Behind it is the hidden storage space, accessible only by removing the left drawer since the opening extends all the way to the back on that side. Each lock plate of the cabinet has its own refined reticulated design, showcasing; a pair of elder figures tending a pine tree 松 (matsu) when the sun is rising on the horizon; two of the Seven Gods of Fortune 七福神 Shichifukujin, Daikokuten 大黒天 and Ebisu 恵比須 with their attributes; dancing shôjô 猩猩 near a sake pot; pair of cranes 鶴 (tsuru); pair of minogame蓑亀 (mythical turtle); and a view on mount Fuji 富士山. Each 'scene' paired with their own corner pieces and escutcheons. The cabinet is very spacious and ideal for easy storage due to the many different type of compartments. Each side is equipped with a 'pole-carrying'-handle for easy transport and for 'locking' the upper part into place. The ishô'dansu is in a very good restored condition. Dimensions: Height 116.5 cm (T 58.2 cm, W 58.3 cm), Width 118.2 cm, Depth 43.6 cm. Period: Japan - Second half 19th century (Early Meiji period). These kind of cabinets originate from the island Sado 佐渡, which lies in the Niigata Prefecture 新潟県.
