A LACQUERED JAPANESE BOX FOR PERSONAL ACCESSORIES, MID-LATE 20TH CENTURY Nice large, rectangular black lacquered tebako 手箱 (box for personal accessories) featuring a design of maple leaves in full autumn colors 椛 (momiji) carried by a meandering stream. Executed in hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) in hues of gold, red and a touch of silver. Chrysanthemum-shaped copper cord rings with écru silk tassels embellish the sides. The interior fitted with a removable tray, lacquered entirely in black finished with a golden fundame rim 粉溜地 (matt lacquer). A golden polymer applique of a crest 紋 (mon) adorns one of the short sides, depicting three swirling commas 三ツ巴 (mitsudomoe). Dimensions: Height 17.8 cm, Width 17 cm, Depth 38.2 cm. Period: Japan - Mid-/Late Shôwa period (Mid-/Late 20th century). The box is in a good restored condition, with traces of use, mainly along the inner rims.
