TWO JAPANESE ANTIQUE TAKEDA DOLLS, 19TH CENTURY Ensemble of 2 antique Takeda dolls 竹田人形 (Takeda ningyô). Both in the shape of an elaborately dressed samurai standing in a dynamic pose and with a strong facial expression. They are both placed on a black wooden base. The dolls are very well made with great details, like the heads that are made of shell paste 胡粉 (gofun). The dolls and the costumes are in fair original condition, with traces of age and wear. Please look at the photos for reference. Size doll on stand with pointy helmet: Height 38 cm, Width 18 cm, Depth 12 cm. Size other doll: Height 28 cm, Width 21 cm, Depth 13.5 cm. Period: Japan - 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period). The Takeda dolls are modelled after the popular characters from the theater play during the Edo period. They are known for their exaggerated posture and facial expressions of the puppet dolls and kabuki actors on stage.
