Pair of gilt bronze sculptures depicting so-called Horses of Marly. h. cm. 34. Commissioned by Louis XV from Guillaume Coustou in 1743, the monumental marble sculptures, depicting two wild horses stopped by Indian slaves, decorated the trough located at the entrance to the park of the Château de Marly, where they remained until 1794 when they were moved to Paris's Place de la Concorde. Exposed to continuous weathering, the two works were first restored, in 1840, and then brought to the Louvre Museum in 1984.
