Description

Large pair of painted tole cone vases Decorated with different scenes on each side, i.e. eight complementary designs facing each other. Lovers, embracing lovers, vestals, country scenes. Gilded lead feet with winged claws. Some wear and tear, one nut needs tightening to adjust the base. Good condition Consulate -1st Empire period Height 42 cm, width 23 cm The unusual quality of the paintwork in these scenes is reminiscent of an avant-garde artistic movement that emerged from the workshop of Jacques-Louis David, known as the "Barbus Sect", the "Mediators" or the "Primitives" (circa 1798-1803). In particular, the painter Jean Broc worked in this spirit, characterized by a return to the sources of Antiquity, and virtuous values quite typical of this pair, where we also find a specific chromaticism. Their identified works are extremely rare.
