Gilded brass top cap featuring a rooster with outstretched wings resting on a spindle and holding lightning bolts in its right paw, within a wreath of oak and laurel leaves. Gold top ring encircled by pearled friezes, topped with the embossed inscription: "TERROR - BELLI - DECUS - PACIS" and an oak leaf and laurel wreath motif. Lower gold ring encircled by pearled friezes engraved on the rim: "Vte DODE DE LA BRUNERIE (GUILLAUME)". Plain vermeil lower cap. Traces of title and JM goldsmith's hallmark attributed to François Jules MANCEAUX (Insculptation February 21, 1845). Length: 50 cm. Diameter: 47 mm. Weight: 370 gr. B.E. History: "In September (1847), the death of the Duke of Reggio, whom three other marshals had preceded into the grave without being replaced, left the king free to appoint two, and it was to Dode that he gave one of the available batons. Until then, Vauban had been the only general officer in the Corps of Engineers to be granted this high favor. General Dode's elevation to the first rank of the military hierarchy gave a worthy successor to France's most illustrious engineer. His army was proud of it, and the numerous congratulations the new Marshal received on the occasion of his appointment convinced him that the entire army had applauded the King's choice".
