Description

FRANCE ORDER OF THE LEGION OF HONOR, instituted in 1802. Rare Monarchie de Juillet-period grand-croix jewelry, modified IIe République, from Marshal Dode de la Brunerie. In gold, chased with a wreath of oak and laurel leaves, a five-pointed star with double white enamel and bolted tips. Obverse with Bonaparte's profile on a grey background and the legend "BONAPARTE PREMIER CONSUL 19 MAI 1802"; reverse with crossed flags and the legend "HONNEUR ET PATRIE". Full trigger guard, ball bélière, smooth ring. Original scarf in red moire, with small bow. Diameter 75 mm. Gross weight: 80 g. T.T.B. (Minimal hair and surface chip on one branch). History: Dode had been Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor since April 28, 1843. When the regime changed (1848), he retained his insignia, modifying it by removing the royal crown and changing the center obverse. The jewels of the great crosses of the Second Republic are extremely rare, the vast majority having been subsequently modified (the Marshal died in March 1851).
