Description

[BÉVY Joseph]. Histoire des inaugurations des rois, empereurs et autres souverains de l'univers... Paris, Moutard, 1776; in-8, contemporary red morocco binding, gilded fillets framing the boards, gilded arms in the center, ornate ribbed spine, gilded edges, modern case with a window to reveal the arms. First edition with 14 plates showing a total of 81 ceremonial costumes based on drawings by Rieg. Dazzling red morocco binding with the coat of arms of Louis XVI, still very fresh. The printed dedication to the Princess of Chimay does not appear in this copy. Was she displeased, even though she was Marie-Antoinette's lady-in-waiting? This leaf (a2) has not been bound in this copy, a fact not mentioned in previous catalogs in which this book is described. Bookplate of James Toovey, bibliophile bookseller who bought Gosford Castle in 1878 with its library, one of the finest in England. Modern bookplate JFC (Jean François Chaponnière, Sotheby's sale 2019, no. 68). "Numerous and pretty figures, curious for the costumes" (Ruggieri, no. 152). Saffroy, I, 1227 - Colas, Bibliographie du costume, I, 320.
