Description

WEIS Jean-Martin. Représentation des fêtes données par la ville de Strasbourg pour la convalescence du Roi. Paris, Laurent Aubert, 1745; broadside, contemporary red morocco binding, large gilded rocaille decoration framing the boards, arms of Louis XV in the center of the boards, arms of Strasbourg in the corners, ribbed spine decorated with crowned L numerals, interior lace, gilded edges, modern plexiglass folder with red cloth spine and flaps. A splendid book published the day after Louis XV's convalescence. After falling seriously ill in Metz in 1744 and given up for dead, he miraculously recovered in Strasbourg, where he was transported. The book, commemorating the unprecedented festivities held in this city in October, describes the most spectacular scenes: feasts, parades, fireworks displays, etc. The volume features a title frontispiece, an equestrian portrait of the king after Parrocel, 11 double plates engraved by Le Bas after Jean-Martin Weis, engraver for the city of Strasbourg, and 20 engraved text pages set in fine rocaille-style frames. The bookbinder Padeloup was commissioned to design a model of decorated binding for luxury copies destined for high dignitaries. The copy is enriched with a rare colored proof. Ex-libris in red morocco. Ruggieri, n°574.
